Biodiversity, Nature & Landscape
Hannover's reputation as a 'City in the Green' rests partly on the quality and variety of its recreational spaces, both in the city centre and on the margins, which can be easily and quickly reached by all Hanoverians and thus make a considerable contribution to the quality of urban life. Securing these open spaces is an important aspect of urban development.
Extensive green spaces such as the Eilenriede city forest and the Leineaue river plain extend into the centre of Hannover, while other large and small open countryside areas surround the city on its borders with neighbouring towns. Along with recreation, these landscapes fulfil important functions for sustainable urban development: they compensate for pollution, offer habitats to wild plants and animals, and are farmed or used in other landscape-related ways.
Caring for and developing landscape spaces aims to respond equally to the interests of local recreation, nature conservation and sustainable farming and forestry, and to reconcile them as far as possible. For seekers of recreation and exercise there are many cycling and walking paths giving access to and linking Hannover's landscape spaces. The principle of 'care through use' is applied in cooperation with farmers and other users, to agree on and use nature- and environmentally compatible farming methods.
