Planning, Building & Mobility

It is a basic human need to live, work and rest...

... in pleasant surroundings, and minimising the environmental impact of these surroundings means, for example, that buildings should be used as long as possible. This is environmentally sound; every alteration or new construction impacts on sensitive ecosystems. We have to treat our natural resources sensitively if they are to be available to us in future, and take care that planning and building happens at sustainable levels. Sustainable planning means the integration of town and country, of built structures and landscapes, of local recreation and nature conservation.

Modell Kronsberg - Ecological Building for the Future

The Kronsberg development as an 'EXPO 2000 project' offers a model of the most modern ecological construction and habitation in the spirit of Agenda 21. The principle aim in developing the new city district was optimised planning and construction for sustainability at all levels. Ecological aims were set within a regulatory framework of compact urban planning concepts, environmentally responsible transport, high quality open space planning, environmentally sound energy supply systems, sparing use of natural resources and raising public awareness. Through to the EXPO 2000 World Exposition, in the space of just 30 months almost 3,000 homes were built to an exceptionally high ecological standard and above average comfort levels. The overwhelmingly positive opinions of the district voiced by professionals at home and abroad have confirmed the success of the project. Numerous instruments and technologies incorporated in the 'Kronsberg Standard' can be used without modification by all local authorities in Germany, and this is already standard practice in some cities. They are certainly transferable and applicable to the situation of many European cities and communities.

At the 'Energiespar-Oskar' in Linz, Austria in 2001 the Kronsberg project took second prize from among 1,260 submissions from 83 countries.

In November 2002 in St. Pölten, state capital of Lower Austria, Hannover's Director of Environmental and Economic Affairs Hans Mönninghoff once again accepted an prize in recognition of exceptional climate protection – the 'Climate Star 2002' awarded for the first time by the European Climate Alliance, for the exemplary energy and environment concept of the Kronsberg development.

ZeroE

Hannover – Green light for one of Europe's biggest zero emission housing developments

A unique and advanced project started in 2011 in Hannover. One of the biggest and most innovative, zero emission, climate protection developments for around 300 terraced, semi-detached and detached low-energy houses is to be built. The remaining CO2 emissions for the heating requirements and household electricity required will be covered by renewable energies. As well as being energy neutral, the area will provide a very high quality of life with attractive and generous-sized green spaces and an exemplary water concept. After its Expo development at Kronsberg, Hannover is once again setting standards in climate and environmental protection with its ′zero:e park am Hirtenbach′ construction project.
